Brest is a port city located on the most westerly tip of France. Its surrounding metropolitan region has a population of approximately 300,000.

A city traditionally associated with shipbuilding, today it is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most important centres for marine-based research. Covering an area of 220 km²., Brest is also very much a university city with 24,000 students including 1,700 foreign students.
